CALL TO PARTICIPATE
Since Philippine President Benigno Aquino III took office in 2010, over 229 cases of extrajudicial killings, 26 cases of enforced disappearances, 700 cases of illegal arrest and detentions, and 106 cases of torture of civilians have been committed in the Philippines under the US-supported counterinsurgency program Oplan Bayanihan. Supported by US tax dollars, Oplan Bayanihan continues the blood-stained targeting of over 1200 legal activists and outspoken government critics under former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s Oplan Bantay Laya, which garnered international scrutiny from then United Nations Special Rapporteur on Extrajudicial Killings Philip Alston, Amnesty International, and Human Rights Watch.
A 2007 US Senate hearing led to cuts to the annual US military aid package to the Philippine military due to the latter’s culpability in committing these human rights abuses.
Despite documentary evidence, the Philippine government’s culture of impunity protects the ranks of the Philippine military from arrest and prosecution, keeping justice out of reach for countless victims and their families.
The international community is crying for truth, accountability, and justice.
On July 16-18, an International Peoples Tribunal (IPT) will be convened in Washington DC by the International Coalition for Human Rights in the Philippines, National Lawyers Guild, International Association for Democratic Lawyers, and Ibon International.
The IPT will try both Aquino and the US government under Barack Obama for crimes against the Filipino people.
The #EndImpunity Photo Challenge is a social media campaign in support of the IPT’s call for truth, accountability, and justice as a public opinion tribunal.
