On the 125th Philippine Independence Day, BAYAN USA commemorates the Filipino people’s centuries-long legacy of resisting and defeating colonizers. BAYAN USA calls on Filipinos everywhere to continue this legacy through the fight for national sovereignty against its number-one enemy, U.S. imperialism, as well as increasing aggression from China imperialism. Resist the Marcos II regime and fight for genuine democracy in the Philippines!
Last month, President Bong Bong Marcos Jr. visited Biden in DC to finalize the U.S.-Philippine Bilateral Security Guidelines, an update to the US-GRP Mutual Defense Treaty. These guidelines were brokered mostly in secret and say that the U.S. will aid the Philippines in case of an external armed attack. This is defined to include any attack in the West Philippine Sea against any military vessels, even the Philippine Coast Guard. During this visit, Marcos and Biden also discussed the implementation of U.S. military access to four additional Philippine bases under the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement. Permanent U.S. military presence and any future U.S. aggression against China is being justified as “defense” for the U.S.’ “little brown brother,” the Philippines.
But as history has shown, the United States has a track record of abandoning the Philippines in times of war. In World War II, the United States abandoned the Philippines to Japanese occupation and then proceeded to bomb Manila to smithereens upon its return. Unequal military agreements like the Mutual Defense Treaty tie the hands of the Philippines and obligate the Filipino people to side with the United States if war breaks out between competitors, U.S. and China. The Filipino people must NOT side with either superpower, and must call for the end of all foreign military intervention and unequal military agreements!
In addition to undermining Philippine territorial integrity, the Marcos regime is selling out the country’s economic sovereignty to foreign investors and the local ruling elite. BBM has already gone on over 10 trips outside the Philippines in the first year of his administration, securing over 65 billion dollars worth of foreign investments.
Though this may seem positive on paper, multiple studies have shown that millions of Filipinos remain poor even with foreign direct investment. In fact, unemployment has only worsened with the increase of foreign investment. Without a strong national economy and real national industries to protect wages and prices for local producers, the Philippines will not benefit from foreign investment—it will only further enrich the ruling political dynasties and impoverish the majority of the Filipino people.
BAYAN USA calls on all Filipinos and peace-loving people in the United States to stand up against the fascist and neoliberal maneuvers of the Marcos II regime. We must demand the government address rampant inflation and economic crisis through relief, not charter change and foreign investment.
We must expose and oppose the Marcos regime for selling out the Philippines, economically and politically. Join us in our campaigns to say NO to US troops in the Philippines, to END the economic crisis, and to CONFRONT Marcos and other heads of state in person this November as he attends the APEC (Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation) Leadership Summit in San Francisco. Through unity and struggle, people power will prevail.

Sa ika-125 na Araw ng Kalayaan ng Pilipinas, ginugunita ng BAYAN USA ang daan-daang taong pamana ng sambayanang Pilipino ng pakikipaglaban at pagsupil sa mga mananakop. Nananawagan ang BAYAN USA sa lahat ng Pilipino na ipagpatuloy ang pamanang ito sa paglaban para sa pambansang soberanya laban sa pinakamalala nitong kaaway, ang imperyalismong U.S., pati na rin ang lumalalang agresyon mula sa imperyalismong Tsina. Tutulan ang rehimeng Marcos II at lumaban para sa tunay na demokrasya sa Pilipinas!
Nitong huling buwan, binisita ni Pangulong Marcos Jr. si Biden sa DC para kumpletuhin ang U.S.-Philippine Bilateral Security Guidelines, isang pagbabago sa US-GRP Mutual Defense Treaty. Ang mga alituntuning ito ay halos lihim na pinagkasunduan at nagsasabing ang U.S. ay tutulong sa Pilipinas kung may mangyaring armadong atake mula sa labas. Kasama dito ang kahit anong atake sa West Philippine Sea laban sa kahit anong sasakyang militar, kabilang ang Philippine Coast Guard. Sa bisita, pinag-usapan din nina Marcos at Biden ang pagpapatupad ng U.S. military access sa apat na karagdagang base sa Pilipinas sa ilalim ng Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement. Ang pangmatagalang pananatili ng militar ng U.S. at kahit anong agresyon ng U.S. laban sa Tsina sa hinaharap ay kinakatwirang bilang “pagtanggol” ng U.S. sa kanyang “little brown brother,” ang Pilipinas.
Ngunit sa kasaysayan, makailang ulit ng inabandona ng Estados Unidos ang Pilipinas sa panahon ng digmaan. Noong World War II, iniwan ng Estados Unidos ang Pilipinas sa pananakop ng Hapones at pinulbos sa pagbobomba ang Manila sa pagbalik nito. Tinatali ang kamay ng Pilipinas ng mga hindi pantay na kasunduang militar gaya ng Mutual Defense Treaty at inoobliga ang mga Pilipino na pumanig sa Estados Unidos kung magkaroon ng digmaan sa pagitan ng magkatunggaling U.S. at Tsina. Ang mga Pilipino ay HINDI dapat pumanig sa kahit aling superpower, at dapat manawagan para sa katapusan ng panghihimasok ng dayuhang militar at hindi pantay na kasunduang militar!
Dagdag sa pagpapahina sa teritoryal na integridad ng Pilipinas, binebenta ng rehimeng Marcos ang soberanyang pang-ekonomiko ng bansa sa mga dayuhang mamumuhunan at lokal na naghaharing uri. Bumiyahe na si Marcos nang higit sa 10 beses sa labas ng Pilipinas sa unang taon ng kanyang administrasyon, at nakalikom ng halagang higit sa 65 bilyon dolyar ng dayuhang pamumuhunan.
Bagama’t mistulang positibo ito sa papel, maraming pag-aaral na ang nagpakitang milyon milyong Pilipino ay nananatiling naghihirap kahit pa may foreign direct investment. Sa katunayan, lumala lang ang kawalang-hanapbuhay kasabay sa pagtaas ng foreign investment. Sa kawalan ng malakas na pambansang ekonomiya at tunay na pambansang industriya para protektahan ang sahod at presyo na lokal, hindi makikinabang ang Pilipinas sa pamumuhunang dayuhan–itataguyod lang nito ang yaman ng naghaharing pampulitikang dinastiya at ipagpapatuloy ang paghihirap ng karamihan ng Pilipino.
Nananawagan ang BAYAN USA sa lahat ng mga Pilipino at tao sa Estados Unidos na nagnanais ng kapayapaan na tumindig laban sa pasista at neoliberal na pagmamaniobra ng rehimeng Marcos II. Igiit natin na dapat solusyonan ng gobyerno ang laganap na implasyon at krisis pang-ekonomiya sa pamamagitan ng ayuda, at hindi charter change at foreign investment.
Ilantad at tutulan ang pagbenta ng rehimeng Marcos sa Pilipinas, mapa-ekonomiya man o pulitika. Sumali sa aming mga kampanya para sabihing NO to US troops sa Pilipinas, para WAKASAN ang krisis pang-ekonomiya, at para HARAPIN si Marcos at iba pang lider ng mga bansa sa kanilang pagsali sa APEC (Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation) Leadership Summit sa San Francisco sa Nobyembre. Sa pagkakaisa at pakikibaka, mangingibabaw ang lakas ng bayan.
