Warm greetings to you all!
With the current political situation in the Philippines, many of
our brothers and sisters in the homeland have been greatly affected
by the fascist Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo administration.
Also, the current political climate in the Philippines coupled
with historical events has had a major influence in, specifically,
the women of the Philippines. Many of the factors leading up to
the recent undeclared Martial Law, has also contribute to the wide
sex-trafficking of Filipino women, exploitation of Filipino domestic
workers and the rampant prostitution of Filipino women in the Philippines.
Here, in the belly of the beast, many of us have been struggling
to understand the most recent events and their impact on both, the
Philippine people and Filipinos in America, especially the women,
our
sisters.
Please come to dialogue with us about the current situation! babae
welcomes you and your contributions!!

Members of her family were also victims of human rights violations, with one sister tortured and murdered by the military while another two siblings were unlawfully imprisoned. Having survived that experience, Marie played a key role in the historic class-action lawsuit against the Marcos estate, as part of the 10,000 victims of human rights violations in the Philippines. What is Martial Law and how/why was it declared?
What are the conditions in the Philippines that led to this declaration?
Who was Ferdinand Marcos and what kind of leader was he?
What was the response of the Filipino students, youth?
What was the response of the workers, farmers, women, church?
Why are many saying Martial Law is being resurrected under the current administration of Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo?
How can we, as Filipinos in the US, take part in a people's resolution to fight against Martial Law?
Batas Militar is the first extensive documentary on Martial Law and the grandest documentary production ever made in the Philippines. Batas Militar promoted two things. One, its timeless message. Martial Law should never happen again in any form, at any time. And that the price for democracy is eternal vigilance. Winner of several awards including Best Documentary History at the New York Film Festival 1998. This film was also shown at the International Documentary Festival in Amsterdam and at the Asia Pacific Film Festival in Bangkok, 1999. Winner of several awards including Best Documentary History at the New York Film Festival 1998. In English and Filipino (with English subtitles).
Join us for a community screening followed by an important community dialogue with ex-detainees and victims of Martial Law under the Marcos regime. Listen to first-hand accounts from those who participated in the Filipino people's struggle against Martial Law.

Rally for Immigrant Rights
Saturday, February 25, 2006
12 pm - 2 pm
St. Elizabeth's Elementary School on 34th Street
Fruitvale District in Oakland
(walking distance from Fruitvale BART)
The US House of Representatives passed the "Border Protection, Anti-Terrorism, and Illegal Control Act - HR 4437" in December 2005.
If passed in the Senate, this bill would:
- make it a felony offense to be in the U.S. without proper documentation
- criminalize nurses, teachers, clergy, social workers or anyone who has regular contact with illegal immigrants
- build a massive wall and fence along the U.S./Mexico border
- erode and eliminate judicial review of immigration court decisions
Undocumented immigration into the United States is not a problem for citizens. It is a forced reality that is a result of massive migration to the U.S. from economic crisis-ridden countries such as the Philippines. Filipinos in the U.S. are fighting to survive against an unjust, exploitative, and bureaucratic U.S. immigration system that excessively delays and obstructs efficient and dignified paths to permanence for undocumented persons.
There are 10.3 million undocumented people in the United States. They come and remain here to work, oftentimes taking valuable care of others' grandparents, parents and children, provide healthcare in every medical facility, harvesting our food and countless other service jobs. They carry out vital services for our communities but are often underpaid and their labor devalued. Now under another unseen level of immigrant attack. Defeat Sensenbrenner HR4437!
Join babae, Filipino Civil Rights Advocates, Filipino Community Center, Filipinos for Affirmative Action, League of Filipino Students, BAYAN-USA and many supporters who condemn the use of our tax dollars to attack the civil and human rights of immigrant and working class families who built this country!

International Solidarity Mission (ISM) Report Back and Discussion
on the Continuing Human Rights Violations in the Philippines
Friday, October 21, 2005, 7:00 pm
United Teachers of Los Angeles Headquarters
3303 Wilshire Blvd.
Los Angeles, CA 90010
Delegates from the International Solidarity Mission (ISM) in the
Philippines, a human rights mission to uncover human rights violations,
will share their documentation of the deteriorating conditions under
the Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. From January 2001
to June 2005, a total of 4,207 cases of human rights abuses have
been documented by Karapatan, the largest human rights alliance
in the Philippines. The ISM resulted in an International People’s
Tribunal charging President Arroyo guilty for crimes against humanity
according to international law.
This critical event will feature film footage of the military’s
massacre of striking farm workers in Hacienda Luisita in just November
of last year. Video of families giving testimony of their loved
one’s brutal murder and forced abductions will be shown to
the public for the first time in Los Angeles.
Since the delegation in August, the assassinations of Diosdado
Fortuna, Nestle Union leader; Vicky Samonte, leader of a worker’s
organization; Rollie Mariano, Former Union President; and President
Tony Cuizon, Atlas Mining Corporation Union, have added to the growing
human rights violations committed under the Arroyo administration.
Event co-sponsored by: Habi Arts, Anakbayan Los Angeles, Bayan
USA, Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance (APALA), United Teachers
of Los Angeles (UTLA), The Southern California Confederation of
Iranians, The Jericho Amnesty Coalition-Los Angeles, The Puerto
Rican Alliance, United Farm Workers (UFW), International Action
Center (IAC), One Korea LA Forum.
